Safeguarding Awareness Week: Day two - safeguarding requirements for clubs 2025/26
All of our clubs must follow the requirements set out in the Basketball England Safeguarding Regulations and Policy (Adults and Children), whether you are a local and/or national league club.
Here's your checklist for the upcoming season:
- Your club has a Club Welfare Officer (CWO) who is registered on PlayHQ. We would recommend two CWOs for larger clubs
CWOs for any club with juniors must:
- Hold a valid DBS recorded on PlayHQ
- Complete BE's safeguarding training and the CWO module
- Be aware of safeguarding policies, procedures, and expected standards of behaviour
If you are unsure about anything, please contact the Safeguarding Team – we are here to help. Stay on the look out for our quarterly CWO forums too.
- Your club has a safeguarding policy in place (which is shared and understood by all members including coaches, players, and parents). And this is brought to life through all club activity!
- Please see our safeguarding requirements to work or volunteer in basketball. It is the responsibility of the club to ensure all staff (paid and volunteers) meet these standards
PlayHQ makes this easy for club admins, still finding your way around the platform?
- Clubs must NOT let coaches without DBS checks in place coach, all of the above requirements must be met before an individual begins any activity at a BE affiliated club
You are responsible for who you let into your club, do the checks.
- If a club becomes aware someone has content on their DBS , a disclosure must be made to BE within 24 hours
- Any member of a club MUST NOT allow any concern to go unreported. If there is a concern, a club must have a clear process for this to be reported. Clubs must not sit on concerns
- There is a duty to report concerns relating to poor practice or any behaviour bringing basketball into disrepute of a child/adult at risk, eg you become aware someone in a position of trust (official, coach, CWO) is being investigated for offences against children, you MUST report this to the Basketball England Safeguarding Team
- All BE members must cooperate in good faith with any safeguarding process/procedures. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility
